Proof rolling

Building a road – A ‘Proof Roll’ is called out in the spec for the subgrade. The process has us putting a heavy truck on the road rolling back and forth looking for ruts and soft spots.

This truck is spraying to reduce dust, but provides an arbitrary time to see how a subgrade is holding up.

Video of a water truck doing some dust mitigation – those tires aren’t sinking. That’d be a pass.

This one holds up. Trucks not sinking or making ruts. A very thin and freshly wet top layer is the only give under the massive weight. That would be a pass.

Here’s an example of a failed proof roll. Truck heaves, creates ruts, and appears that it’s not even driving on what’s supposed to be a road.
